Shawarma & it’s History,
The story of Shawarma, Gyros and Doner are basically same thing with some minor differences.
Story starts in Mid-Asia with the Turks. Turkish people improved the idea of "meat on a stick" and created doner ages ago. Traditionally, it was horizontally cooked in-front of a wooden/charcoal pit and this version is still available with the name "Cağ Kebap" in Turkey.
Doner got its name from the Turkish word "dön-mek" and means "spins".
In Ottoman Empire era, due to high interaction of Greek and Turkish cultures, this food spread to Greece and it began to being enjoyed by Greeks years ago. However the name Gyro also means the same in Greek meaning, “to turn”.
At the same time, as another part of the Ottoman Empire, Arabs also had the similar food and they named it as "Shawarma". This word is the Arabic pronunciation of the Turkish word "Çevirme" [First letter is Turkish and pronounced as ch. Since Arabic does not have that letter, they pronounce it as sh. Similarly, the closest pronunciation of the word Çevirme becomes Shawarma with the other Arabic letters]. Çevirme is another Turkish word with a similar meaning, "to turn".

شاورما وتاريخها،
قصة الجيرو ، الشاورما و دونر هي في الأساس نفس الشيء مع بعض الاختلافات الطفيفة.
تبدأ القصة في منتصف آسيا مع الأتراك. الشعب التركي حسن فكرة "اللحوم على عصا" وخلق دونر منذ القدم. تقليديا، كان يطهي أفقيا امام تجويف مليء بالخشب / الفحم، وهذا النوع لا يزال موجود مع اسم "كاج كباب" في تركيا.
دونر حصلت على اسمها من الكلمة التركية "دون-ميك" ويعني "يدور".
في عصر الإمبراطورية العثمانية، بسبب التفاعل العالي بين الثقافتين اليونانية والتركية، وانتشر هذا الغذاء إلى اليونان وبدأت تتمتع بها من قبل اليونانيين منذ سنوات. ومع ذلك اسم الجيرو يعني أيضا نفس المعنى في اليونانية، "تقليب".
في الوقت نفسه، وكجزء آخر من الإمبراطورية العثمانية، كان للعرب أيضا طعام مشابه وسموه بأنه "شاورما". هذه الكلمة هي النطق العربي للكلمة التركية "Çevirme" الحرف الأول في اللغة التركية ينطق [تش[. وبما أن اللغة العربية لا تملك تلك الرسالة، فإنها تنطق بأنها ]ش[. وبالمثل، فإن أقرب نطق للكلمة Çevirme يصبح شاورما مع الحروف العربية الأخرى] Çevirme هي كلمة تركية أخرى ذات معنى مماثل، " تقليب ".
